Multiple people struck by car at farmer’s market in North Carolina, police say

Multiple shoppers were hit by a car as they browsed a farmer’s market Saturday morning in eastern North Carolina, according to police.

It happened at the Wilmington Farmer’s Market, and witnesses report seeing the car “plow through the center of the market.” Photos show the car came to a stop when it slammed against a brick pillar, officials say.

Investigators suspect the incident may have been an accident, caused by a medical emergency.

“Officers responded to the area after a vehicle entered the market and struck multiple individuals. Several people were transported to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening,” Wilmington police said in a June 6 news release.

“At this time, investigators believe the driver may have been experiencing a medical issue prior to the crash.”

Police did not release details of how many people were injured.

The Wilmington Farmer’s Market reports it closed after the crash, and shared photos of extensive damaged to display booths.

Wilmington is about a 130-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
