U.S. Geological Survey maps show an average of just under 2 inches of rain fell in the northern part of the county, while the southern part ranged from 3 inches to 5 inches over a 24-hour period.

As for the state totals, a rain gage in Fairfield (167 miles east of downtown Raleigh) recorded 8.01 inches of rain over 24 hours, the USGS says.

The broadest band of heavy rain appeared to be a 100-mile-long stretch between Statesville and Burlington, where multiple gages reported more than 5.5 inches of rain, including 6.61 inches at Ryan Creek near Greensboro, officials said.
Charlotte continues to face a 30% chance of rain during the day Friday, and a 70% chance Friday night, the National Weather Service says.
