A 22-year-old Queens University swimmer died in car crash on early Sunday morning near campus, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.<\/p>\n

\u201cForever a royal,\u201d said the university\u2019s swim team on social media<\/a>. \u201cWe honor the life of Keegan McKenney \u2014 a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family whose impact will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

McKenney was in the passenger seat when the crash occurred at 2:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of Queens Road West, CMPD said in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The vehicle, a BMW M3, went off the road and crashed into a tree, CMPD said. A police incident report said there was also a 22-year-old woman and another man inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

CMPD said all three were wearing seatbelts. Investigators are still determining if speed or impairment factored into the crash, the department said. Alcohol may be a factor, according to the police report.<\/p>\n
