Bryce Young has taken massive strides year-over-year when it comes to his command of the offense, his charisma in the huddle, his confidence in himself and his team<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, he was praised for all that again.<\/p>\n

It was just under … well … \u201ccolorful\u201d circumstances.<\/p>\n

It was nearly 1:40 p.m. Tuesday when Young jogged across the field to set up for another rep of drills, playing pitch-and-catch as receivers cycled through their route trees. He was not happy. There\u2019d been drops. Slips on the grass. Overthrows and underthrows and tosses otherwise off target. Part of that was due to a mini-monsoon that swept through the first 10 minutes or so of practice, sure.<\/p>\n

But still, Young had seen enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not raining anymore; clean this s— up now!\u201d he screamed.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t done.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not f—– raining,\u201d Young continued. \u201cWe need better execution!\u201d<\/p>\n

As you might imagine, the mild-mannered quarterback\u2019s words went viral, first locally then nationally when the NFL shared it on their official social platforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And to Carolina\u2019s credit, the Panthers\u2019 offense responded by cleaning up what started as a sloppy day and turning it into one replete with splash plays from Jonathon Brooks, and sharp decisions by Young, and deep opportunities to Chris Brazzell, and a freshly healthy Ja\u2019Tavion Sanders cutting laterally like he did before last year\u2019s season-ending ankle injury.<\/p>\n

How else did the team respond to Young\u2019s challenge?<\/p>\n

Head coach Dave Canales<\/a>\u2019 exact words: \u201cI loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more he owns (the offense), the more he\u2019s looking for specific things out of the tight ends, wideouts and backs as the concepts come alive,\u201d Canales said. \u201cAnd you know, I heard him get a little bit passionate. We got a little bit of a monsoon for a second there in practice. And once the rain had passed, he was like, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s lock back in. We gotta come up with these balls.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he said it in a little more colorful language than that. But I just love it. I just love it. I love the fact that he\u2019s taking ownership. And the guys see that. And rally around that. That\u2019s something they all appreciate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cussing in a gladiator sport like football shouldn\u2019t draw much attention. It\u2019s normal. Watch any huddle breakdown by Derrick Brown last season for proof. Or step inside any locker room anywhere in the history of the sport. It\u2019s not even all that taboo for Young \u2014 who, if you ask his teammates, you\u2019ll hear stories of him being a \u201cdawg,\u201d picking his spots to air out frustrations behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

But Tuesday\u2019s moment was still an interesting window into who Young could become in 2026. It\u2019s an early assertion \u2014 confirmation \u2014 that this is his team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ain\u2019t heard nothing about that,\u201d guard Robert Hunt said Tuesday. The offensive linemen were on the other side of the field as the WR-QB drills went on. \u201cThat\u2019s great though. He\u2019s taking it serious. It sets the tone. So that\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunt wasn\u2019t necessarily surprised by Young\u2019s passion, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll come in after games and stuff like that, too,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cHe\u2019ll let it be known. So he\u2019s got it in him for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ask Canales about such a phenomenon, and he\u2019ll make clear that Young is the alpha of the offense, no doubt. No Andy Dalton as a sounding board or safety net anymore<\/a> as in the three previous seasons, either. But the head coach will also make clear that the development of Young will be a team effort among the QBs \u2014 which include free agent pick-ups Kenny Pickett<\/a> and Will Grier<\/a>, as well as undrafted rookie Haynes King<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just being in support of Bryce. When you build a quarterback room, those guys\u2019 jobs is to know what they\u2019re doing, but also to bring value to the quarterback, to Bryce. And that\u2019s really all of our responsibility. And I love that Haynes gets to see that happen in front of him by veteran guys \u2014 that you bring value.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re not out there getting the reps, there\u2019s so much that you can bring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s in film study, or \u201cenriching the conversation\u201d in team meetings.<\/p>\n

Or maybe it involves refocusing a group of players if they stumble through a drill \u2014 colorful language welcomed.<\/p>\n
