And for millions of Americans who shop at Walmart (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/WMT\" rel=\"nofollow\">WMT<\/a>) every week, it matters.<\/p>\n<p>To understand the CEO&#8217;s message, you need to know what rising fuel prices mean for a company like Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter, <a href=\"https:\/\/fiscal.ai\/company\/NasdaqGS-WMT\/investor-relations\/\">Walmart<\/a> absorbed roughly $175 million in higher-than-planned fuel expenses. <\/p>\n<p>That wiped out about <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/281117134edf1cabb5485d13b6719b89.pdf\">250 basis points<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/o\/operating-income\" rel=\"nofollow\">operating income<\/a> growth. In plain terms, fuel costs alone erased a meaningful chunk of what would have been stronger profit growth.<\/p>\n<p>CFO John <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/281117134edf1cabb5485d13b6719b89.pdf\">David Rainey<\/a> was candid about it and stated. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are real impacts to cost of goods sold for us and our suppliers, and if the current elevated cost environment persists, we&#8217;d expect somewhat higher retail price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/i\/inflation\" rel=\"nofollow\">inflation<\/a> in Q2 and the second half of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He then added that if elevated fuel costs persist, shoppers should expect somewhat higher retail price inflation in the second quarter and the back half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>For context, like-for-like inflation at <a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">Walmart<\/a> was just over 1% in the first quarter. Egg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/d\/deflation\" rel=\"nofollow\">deflation<\/a> alone knocked nearly 100 basis points off that figure. High-income customers are still spending with confidence, and lower-income customers are budgeting more carefully and pulling back in visible ways.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/retail\/walmart-shares-a-dire-warning-to-customers\">Related: Walmart raises the red flag on rising prices<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite these headwinds, Walmart is gaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/m\/market-share\" rel=\"nofollow\">market share<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">Transaction growth<\/a> in the United States in the first quarter was the strongest in six quarters. The reason is straightforward: when wallets tighten, more shoppers trade down to Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>Furner leaned into that dynamic. The <a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">company<\/a> now has approximately 7,200 rollbacks active across its assortment, up more than 20% compared to last year. <\/p>\n<p>A recently launched grilling basket, for example, feeds eight people for under $5 per person.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart is using its scale and technology to hold customers even as budgets tighten.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow\">AI<\/a> shopping assistant Sparky has seen weekly active users more than double in just the past quarter. Customers <a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">using Sparky<\/a> spend an average of 35% more per order than those who do not use Sparky. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">company<\/a> is also leaning on speed, now <strong>reaching about 60% of the U.S. population with delivery in 30 minutes or less<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">Rainey<\/a> noted that 17% growth in membership fee revenue reflects customers who see real value in staying connected to Walmart, especially for fuel savings benefits right now.<\/p>\n<p>On guidance, Walmart is holding firm. The <a href=\"http:\/\/these%20are%20real%20impacts%20to%20cost%20of%20goods%20sold%20for%20us%20and%20our%20suppliers,%20and%20if%20the%20current%20elevated%20cost%20environment%20persists,%20we'd%20expect%20somewhat%20higher%20retail%20price%20inflation%20in%20Q2%20and%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20year.\">company<\/a> reiterated full-year constant-currency sales growth of 3.5% to 4.5% and expects operating income growth of 6% to 8% for the year.
