{"id":452,"date":"2026-05-21T05:35:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T05:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/?p=452"},"modified":"2026-05-21T05:35:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T05:35:21","slug":"jail-north-will-reopen-to-manage-overcrowding-from-irynas-law-sheriff-mcfadden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/?p=452","title":{"rendered":"Jail North will reopen to manage overcrowding from \u2018Iryna\u2019s Law\u2019: Sheriff McFadden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mecklenburg County Sheriff\u2019s Office will reopen a shuttered juvenile jail later this year \u2014 but not to hold teenagers this time.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/?p=450\">Charlotte today: Maman bakery opens, new surveillance video in shooting<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the county\u2019s main jail in uptown struggles with \u201cunprecedented overcrowding,\u201d Jail North will reopen in August and take on some of the burden, the sheriff\u2019s office said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The reopening is slated for sometime in early August.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, 2,084 people were being held in the main jail that is designed to hold just 1,791. The sheriff\u2019s office said that means 288 people are being kept in \u201coverflow areas\u201d and having to sleep on a \u201cStack-A-Bunk,\u201d a bunk that is on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, The Charlotte Observer reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article315715716.html\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">complaints from some who had to sleep on those bunks.<\/a> Overcrowding is affecting everything from meal times to medical treatment, several people being kept in the jail told the Observer.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Garry McFadden has blamed \u201cIryna\u2019s Law,\u201d a criminal justice bill authored by Republicans in the state General Assembly and signed by Democratic Gov. Josh Stein late last year. The bill was filed in response to the killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a city light rail train. Among other things, the bill changed some pretrial release rules.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/?p=448\">Historic site near Charlotte bought by Dubai energy company for North American HQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we move into the summer months \u2014 when crime tends to increase \u2014 reopening Detention Center North is a necessary step to help manage the overcrowding while we continue working through these ongoing challenges,\u201d McFadden said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s office is also rolling out a hiring initiative that it hopes will draw in up to 50 new detention officers, according to the news release.<\/p>\n<p>Jail North housed juveniles charged with crimes before McFadden closed it in 2022. At the time, he cited staffing problems at uptown\u2019s adult jail.<\/p>\n<p>Local children\u2019s advocates, criminal justice leaders and others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article312575006.html\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">pushed for the sheriff to reopen Jail North<\/a> as a juvenile jail last year.
