Democrats have been bullish about their chances of flipping a congressional seat in western North Carolina \u2014 and new fundraising reports suggest that might be paying off.<\/p>\n

Democratic nominee Jamie Ager significantly outraised Republican incumbent Chuck Edwards in the 11th Congressional District. According to federal reports, Ager raised $1.4 million compared to Edwards\u2019 $155,000 in the second quarter. Ager has now raised more than $3 million this cycle, compared to the roughly $940,000 raised by Edwards.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s yet another sign of trouble for Edwards, who faces an unexpectedly tough challenge in a district he won easily in 2024. Experts shifted the race\u2019s rating from \u201clikely Republican\u201d to \u201clean Republican\u201d last month, and one expert told Blue Ridge Public Radio<\/a> it\u2019s possible that the district could be in toss-up territory by November. The race was initially rated \u201cstrong Republican\u201d last year.<\/p>\n

Edwards has never been a prodigious fundraiser, so his low numbers aren\u2019t exactly surprising, said Chris Cooper, a Western Carolina University political science professor. It\u2019s also fairly normal for the district. Edwards raised similar amounts in the past two elections he won, and Mark Meadows, who was elected there four times, wasn\u2019t a big fundraiser, either.<\/p>\n

The bigger story is the big numbers that Ager is putting up. Cooper said that Ager\u2019s fundraising totals are evidence that the push by national Democrats to draw attention to the race may be working. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee showed it was serious about flipping the district earlier this year by adding Ager to its \u201cRed to Blue\u201d program<\/a>, which gives extra support to candidates in competitive battleground districts. Ager has since drawn national media attention<\/a> and at least one high-profile endorsement \u2014 former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stumped for Ager<\/a> at a well-attended event in May.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more about what Ager has been able to do than what Edwards hasn\u2019t been able to do,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cBut you combine those together, and yeah, you get yourself a bit of a hair on fire moment for Chuck Edwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frustration with lagging Hurricane Helene recovery, Donald Trump\u2019s unpopularity and the district\u2019s small but steady shift to the left<\/a> was already enough to make Democrats hopeful. News of an ethics investigation into Edwards<\/a> for sexual misconduct, including an alleged affair with a staffer, has only increased those hopes. The pending investigation may also explain why the national cavalry \u2014 and its donors \u2014 has not yet come for Edwards in the race. A major Democratic super PAC has already reserved $4.3 million in advertising<\/a> on Ager\u2019s behalf, a figure that Republicans have yet to counter. Edwards hasn\u2019t needed much help from his party to win in the past, but he was facing fewer headwinds then. A more aggressive approach may be necessary now.<\/p>\n

Ager, a farmer with blue-collar appeal, is exactly the type of Democratic candidate that could resonate in a red, rural district. He behaves like a moderate and has been critical of his party<\/a> for \u201cfocusing on identity politics and not on everyday people.\u201d He supports the 2nd Amendment and opposes trans athletes in some sports, and he recently signed onto a pledge<\/a> circulated by moderate House Democrats that rebukes democratic socialism. Heath Shuler, the last Democrat to succeed in the district, was cut from a similar ideological cloth. That centrist approach may be frustrating to more liberal and progressive voters, but it\u2019s likely the best path forward for a Democrat running in firm Trump territory.<\/p>\n

Still, despite the favorable national environment and the increased pressure on Edwards, winning will be an uphill battle for Ager. No Democrat has won the district since 2010, and changing that may require a much bigger national Democratic wave than we\u2019ve seen in recent years. But Cooper does think that it will be the closest any Democrat has come since, which should be enough to put Republicans on edge right now. Given that Edwards recently scrubbed his campaign website<\/a> of references to Trump, he may already recognize the precarious position he\u2019s in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m certainly not going to predict an Ager victory, but I\u2019ll say I think every sign suggests this will be closer than it\u2019s been before, and every sign suggests that Jamie Ager has a pretty big hill to get over,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cThat hill being the baked-in partisanship of a fairly Republican district.\u201d<\/p>\n
