A man was arrested on Saturday, July 11, in connection with the car crash death of a 17-year-old Manolo\u2019s Bakery employee<\/u><\/a> in early June.<\/p>\n

Roderick Gresham, 66, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, speeding and reckless driving in the death of Angelina Naomi Chicas on June 6. He turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff\u2019s Office, according to a CMPD press release.<\/p>\n

The crash took place in the 4300 block of North Sharon Amity Road in east Charlotte. Chicas was attempting to turn when Gresham\u2019s Chrysler 300 collided with her vehicle, police said.<\/p>\n

According to court records, Gresham was driving up to 90 mph just prior to the crash, and hit Chicas\u2019 car at 62 mph. The posted speed limit in the area was 40 mph.<\/p>\n

Gresham told police June 29 he was preparing to merge into the right lane of North Sharon Amity Road when the crash happened, according to an affidavit filed in court. He claimed he didn\u2019t know how fast he was driving, but told police he wasn\u2019t speeding.<\/p>\n

Gresham has been released from jail under a $35,000 secured bond, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

Chicas was an employee at Manolo\u2019s Bakery, a Latin American bakery in east Charlotte.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs my bakers decorate the cakes, they pause, and silent tears fall onto their work tables, showing their grief,\u201d Manolo Betancur, the bakery\u2019s owner, wrote in a statement<\/u><\/a> on Instagram after her death.<\/p>\n

Betancur told WSOC that Chicas had just left work<\/u><\/a> at Manolo\u2019s when the crash occurred.<\/p>\n

According to her obituary<\/a>, Chicas was a student at Independence High School in Mint Hill.<\/p>\n

\u201cAngelina had a love for life, with a beautiful personality and soul,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n
