In 1992, \u201cAladdin\u201d and \u201cThe Bodyguard\u201d were among the year\u2019s box office hits<\/a>, Bill Clinton won the presidential election<\/a>, and \u201cEnd of the Road\u201d by Boyz II Men hit the charts<\/a> (and played on repeat in my cassette player).<\/p>\n

And hungry Charlotte diners were giving The Charlotte Observer\u2019s restaurant writer and critic Helen Schwab a \u201cbunful\u201d of their favorite burger restaurants.<\/p>\n

For a fun look down memory lane, we pulled Helen\u2019s article from the archives. The below text is presented as it appeared at the time. Many of the restaurants mentioned have since closed \u2014 but not all of them! \u2014 and other details may no longer be current.<\/p>\n

The votes came in thick and fast and, perhaps not surprisingly, there was no clear winner. I asked where you\u2019d send the TV tabloid \u201cA Current Affair,\u201d which plans a special for National Hamburger Week (beginning Sunday) and sought our area\u2019s best, juicy, sloppy burgers. You were passionate, articulate and mouth-wateringly descriptive about your favorites.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the tally, with comments where compelling: Lupie\u2019s<\/b> (2718 Monroe Rd.) and Spoon\u2019s<\/b> (multiple locations) tied with five votes each and three folks called or wrote in for the Rebel Room<\/b> (2416 Freedom Dr.), including one faxed letter claiming to represent five votes \u2014 so I guess you could say it got seven. But I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Of Lupie\u2019s<\/b>:<\/p>\n

Of Spoon\u2019s<\/b>:<\/p>\n

Recommended at the Rebel Room<\/b> is the Rebel Cheeseburger with chili, onions, mustard and slaw.<\/p>\n

Next was a group getting three votes apiece:<\/p>\n

Getting two votes each were:<\/p>\n

And a whole bunful of places got a single vote. In Charlotte:<\/p>\n
