The biggest razzle-dazzle night of the year for high school musical theater programs in the Charlotte region unfolded Sunday at Belk Theater in uptown with the 13th annual Blumey Awards from Blumenthal Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The program has provided quite the pipeline of talent from Charlotte to Broadway and beyond, counting alums like Rene\u00e9 Rapp<\/a>, Eva Noblezada<\/u><\/a>, Philip Johnson Richardson<\/a> and Liam Pearce.<\/a> Most recently, Bryson Battle<\/a> just made his Broadway debut in the hit revival of \u201cCats.\u201d<\/p>\n

The winners of the best actor and best actress at the Blumeys go on to New York to compete in the national high school musical theater awards program, the Jimmy Awards<\/a> on June 22.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Blumey winners for best actor and actress were Carmel Christian School\u2019s Anna Jernigan as Ariel Moore in \u201cFootloose\u201d and North Lincoln High\u2019s Harold Garcia as Orpheus in \u201cHadestown Teen Edition.\u201d (Noblezada earned her second Tony nomination starring as Eurydice in the original Broadway cast of \u201cHadestown.\u201d)<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s program had a record-breaking 59 schools from across the region participate in it. The Blumeys recognize excellence in performance, design, production and direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we see on the Blumey stage is the result of months of hard work, collaboration, and fearless creativity,\u201d Blumenthal Arts CEO Tom Gabbard said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly exciting to witness so many of them at the very beginning of their artistic careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ceremony featured musical direction and arrangements from Raegan Casteel, whose recent credits include Broadway and national tour productions of \u201cChess\u201d and \u201c& Juliet,\u201d alongside Broadway composer and longtime Blumeys collaborator David Dabbon for the opening number.<\/p>\n

Choreography was led by Broadway performer, director and choreographer Deidre Goodwin.<\/p>\n

Best Student Orchestra:<\/b> Central Academy of Technology and Arts \u2014 \u201cPippin\u201d (2013 Revival).<\/p>\n

Best Student Costume Designer:<\/b> Cox Mill High School \u2014 Abigail Woerner, \u201cSeussical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best Student Set Designer:<\/b> Catawba Ridge High School \u2014 David Archie, \u201cMamma Mia!\u201d<\/p>\n

Best Student Stage Manager:<\/b> Northwest School of the Arts \u2014 Spencer Angel, \u201cHead Over Heels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best Student Reporter:<\/b> Catawba Ridge High School \u2014 Richard Hughes.<\/p>\n
