Rain began to pour down. Organizers suspended the Mass, and roughly 15,000 Catholics waited out the storm, allowing themselves to be drenched by rain while they prayed the rosary aloud together.

Among them was Jim De Piante, a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua, a church in Mount Holly. He and over a dozen others traveled from the Charlotte area to witness what he believed would be “one of the most important events in the history of the church:” the Society of St. Pius X’s consecration of four bishops without approval from the pope.

When the skies cleared, the ceremony resumed and attendees knelt in the mud to receive Communion.

The Vatican on Thursday declared the SSPX bishops, priests and certain laypeople to be in schism after the group went forward with the consecrations despite repeated warnings from Pope Leo XIV. Long at odds with the Vatican, the order delivered by the pope meant excommunication for the newly consecrated, any SSPX priest and any person who formally adheres to the society.

For De Piante, the storm was a powerful metaphor.

“We will weather the storm that we now face just like we weathered the storm yesterday — peacefully, calmly, for the love of God,” he said. “We’ll come out of this storm.”

The Vatican said the consecrations, carried out without the pope’s approval and therefore in conflict with Catholic law, constituted a schismatic act that severed the society’s communion with Rome. The Diocese of Charlotte did not provide comment for this story.

The Vatican’s declaration has renewed attention on one of the Charlotte region’s most complex corners of Catholic life.

It’s a corner that includes Catholics who attend diocesan-approved Traditional Latin Masses, the Charlotte Latin Mass Community that spent years advocating for their return, the SSPX chapel in Mount Holly and families who have moved between those communities as access to the older liturgy has changed over time.

Some Catholics devoted to traditional worship remain fully in communion with Rome. Others have chosen the SSPX, believing it offers the fullest preservation of Catholic tradition despite its decadeslong dispute with the Vatican.

For De Piante, the story stretches back more than four decades. He said a group of Charlotte-area Catholics invited SSPX priests to begin celebrating Mass in the region in 1981 after becoming dissatisfied with changes in the church. His parents were among them.

After returning to Charlotte in the early 1990s, De Piante and his wife raised their five children in the community. Their children were baptized there, received their first communion and confirmation there, and married there. Today, their grandchildren are being baptized at St. Anthony of Padua in Mount Holly, where De Piante volunteers as music director, leads the men’s group and helps oversee a building expansion prompted by the chapel’s rapid growth.

“My life is totally given over. My retirement is devoted to St. Anthony’s, to this church project, and to the Society of St. Pius X,” he said.

The Society of St. Pius X traces its origins to 1970, when Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the priestly society amid changes following the Second Vatican Council. Members believe preserving the older form of the Mass — commonly called the Traditional Latin Mass — is essential to preserving traditional Catholic theology and ethics, said Matthew Siebert, a philosophy professor at Belmont Abbey College. The group’s opposition to mainstream Catholicism includes but is not limited to the way that mass is celebrated. It’s considered ultra-conservative and rejects modern Catholic involvement on topics such as immigration or the environment.

The society occupied an unusual position within the Catholic Church ever since. In 1988, the society consecrated bishops without the pope’s approval after being instructed not to do so, prompting excommunications that were later lifted. Even so, recent popes have maintained that SSPX priests do not have authorization to celebrate Mass.

But the Society of St. Pius X represents only one part of Charlotte’s traditional Catholic community.

Long before the SSPX returned to international headlines, local Catholics tried official church channels to bring the Traditional Latin Mass back to the Diocese of Charlotte.

Chris Lauer was among the founders of the Charlotte Latin Mass Community, an organization formed after Pope Benedict XVI expanded access to the Traditional Latin Mass in 2007. After local church leaders denied requests to hold mass, the group appealed to Rome and eventually secured approval for a weekly Sunday Latin Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church in Charlotte.

Interest spread. Priests who learned the older liturgy celebrated it in their own parishes, Lauer said, and over the next several years Traditional Latin Masses expanded across the diocese.

Read more Dave Ramsey warns Americans on 401(k)s, IRAs (he’s not wrong)

“It didn’t take long before 11 or 13 different places around the Diocese of Charlotte sprung up from that one,” Lauer said.

The Traditional Latin Mass is the form of the Catholic liturgy that predates the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Although it is celebrated primarily in Latin, Lauer said the language is only part of its appeal.

“They’re looking for authenticity,” he said. “They want to pray the same way that their grandparents prayed. They want to say the same Mass that their great-great-great-grandparents prayed.”

Expansion slowed after Pope Francis significantly restricted the Traditional Latin Mass in 2021. Then, shortly before retiring, Bishop Peter Jugis announced Latin Masses in the Diocese of Charlotte would end. His successor, Bishop Michael Martin, implemented that plan.

Today, the Diocese of Charlotte’s only approved Traditional Latin Mass is celebrated at the Chapel of the Little Flower in Mooresville. Lauer said the chapel offers Sunday Mass but not a full parish life.

Even within Charlotte’s traditional Catholic community, Lauer said, families move between groups. Some attend the approved Latin Mass exclusively. Others worship at both the Mooresville chapel and St. Anthony’s. Others choose SSPX because they believe it offers a more complete traditional parish life.

Regardless of where they worship, many are drawn by similar motivations.

Lauer said younger Catholics increasingly seek what they view as stability, continuity and authenticity in a culture they see as constantly changing. For many families, the appeal isn’t simply that the Mass is celebrated in Latin. It’s the sense of participating in the same prayers, rituals and traditions practiced by generations of Catholics before them.

Siebert observed similar trends.

“Many Catholics feel that traditional theology will keep the Church from being swayed by mere popular opinion,” he said. “It seems that many younger families are drawn to the more traditional Masses.”

St. Anthony’s has grown steadily in recent years, De Piante said, first during the COVID-19 pandemic, when SSPX churches continued offering the sacraments while many Catholic parishes suspended services, and again after restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass prompted more families to seek alternatives. A church that once drew about 150 people for a single Sunday Mass now regularly fills two overflowing Masses each weekend, he said.

For supporters like De Piante, the bishop consecrations were about ensuring the society’s future.

Only bishops can ordain priests in the Catholic Church. Without bishops, De Piante said, the SSPX would eventually have no priests to celebrate Mass, hear confessions or administer the sacraments that members believe are central to their spiritual lives.

“It’s sort of like when a beehive loses the queen,” he said. “Eventually the hive dies.”

He believes the consecrations were necessary to preserve the priesthood for future generations, even without papal approval.

Though the Vatican sees things differently, De Piante said the excommunications change little. He does not consider himself separated from the Catholic Church and believes the Vatican’s action will be overturned through the church’s own legal processes.

“I’m going to wake up tomorrow and do exactly the same thing tomorrow that I did today,” De Piante said. “This is not going to have any effect on my life whatsoever.”

While he expects some newcomers may be unsettled by the Vatican’s declaration, he doubts longtime members will leave. De Piante said the consecrations will likely bring even more attention to St. Anthony’s, regardless of where Catholics ultimately choose to worship. St. Anthony’s has an online form for people who want more information about the church, and those requests spiked Thursday, De Piante said.

“Although it seems harsh, a right-thinking Catholic will understand (these) excommunications are a blessing,” he said. “We may not understand how or when or why… but it is a blessing.”

Read more Tesla’s blowout quarter comes with a warning sign

After SSPX bishops were consecrated in Écône, Catholics from Mount Holly and Charlotte reflect on Latin Mass growth, excommunications and parish life in North Carolina.

[2

post-2887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-read-todays-edition
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
