Anyone\u2019s who painted a bedroom can attest to the importance of matching hues &#8230; and the agonizing eyesore that comes from being a smidge off.<\/p>\n<p>So of course South Carolina is meticulous about its school\u2019s colors. <a href=\"https:\/\/sc.edu\/about\/offices_and_divisions\/communications\/toolbox\/colors\/\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">The Gamecocks do not just wear garnet.<\/a>  As laid out in meticulous detail on their marketing and communications department website, they wear Pantone 202 (USC also provides specifics for three other color ID systems).<\/p>\n<p>You get the point. There is no guessing about South Carolina\u2019s garnet.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant it didn\u2019t take a magnifying glass and personal color wheel to recognize that the garnet that Nike is using for South Carolina is \u2014 different, which is to say it\u2019s not exactly Pantone 202. It is a few shades lighter than the garnet most Gamecock fans are accustomed to, but the discrepancies vary drastically.<\/p>\n<p>On South Carolina\u2019s football jerseys and dri-fit T-shirts, the difference is minimal. In the same vein, garnet lettering on items with a black or white base look very similar to Under Armour garnet. But the change becomes apparent on garnet cotton T-shirts, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jordankaye_23\/status\/2072172552575713520\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">which resemble Alabama crimson<\/a> more than Gamecock garnet.<\/p>\n<p>It should be known: This is not an issue exclusive to South Carolina and\/or Nike.<\/p>\n<p>Just as South Carolina transitioned from Under Armour to Nike on Wednesday, Penn State flipped from Nike to Adidas. Sure enough, the<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DylanEveryday\/status\/2071967854899937702\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\"> Nittany Lions\u2019 jersey is a different color.<\/a> Heck, look through old Gamecock football pictures. Every era has a new shade of garnet.<\/p>\n<p>Even as recent as April, when the Gamecocks were still with Under Armour, South Carolina\u2019s players and coaches held press conferences where their shirts, the podium and background all appeared to<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jordankaye_23\/status\/2039378323466281041\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\"> be three distinct shades of garnet.<\/a> This is nothing new.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotterelocationguide.com\/?p=2719\">Travis Kelce was his brother\u2019s best man 8 years ago. Did Jason stand up with him?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But you may be wondering: <i>That\u2019s all fine and well, but why can\u2019t Nike just take South Carolina\u2019s exact Pantone number and slap it on everything?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Because Nike doesn\u2019t have that exact color. The company has its own color wheel\/palate and puts its partner schools into color teams. You have \u201cTeam Royal Blue,\u201d \u201cTeam Purple,\u201d \u201cTeam Scarlet University Red,\u201d \u201cTeam Orange,\u201d etc. That process, it should be known, is not unique to Nike. While it was with Under Armour, South Carolina was a part of \u201cTeam Cardinal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, none of Nike\u2019s \u201cteams\u201d exactly matches South Carolina\u2019s garnet. What likely happened is that Nike put South Carolina into the team it thought was closest \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jordankaye_23\/status\/2072187117090820396\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">likely \u201cTeam Crimson\u201d<\/a> \u2014 and worked to bring it as close to Gamecock garnet as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a challenge with a color so unique,\u201d South Carolina athletic director Jeremiah Donati<a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/sports\/carolina\/gamecocks-athletics-under-armour-nike-switch\/article_f9e8df2d-fef9-46d7-b157-5bf411e38727.html\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\"> told The Post and Courier.<\/a> \u201cIt shows up different in different materials, on paper vs. paint, on clothes vs. uniforms. It\u2019s a great challenge that any apparel provider has to match &#8230; We\u2019re happy with where they landed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also the chance that as the partnership between Nike and South Carolina grows, and the company fulfills its obligation of completing a full redesign of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/nike-already-planning-pretty-cool-163116512.html?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlc3RhdGUuY29tLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANzOUrS3NL69it0lOo0QoB77LMV6yEZEEO3cjQs5kDL0M1eqA0vAFER5d5eZnrCMDwP8w6quUrCXBFol3YNNGYDEm5AMQKAoQphXnHh1NJAXhgDYG1ubiF1cCWtKUvLrFEZIlap2YIXwIg9ldVo6SbPogp9yKI-ohZI6vhcOiwFA&amp;guccounter=2\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">the Gamecocks\u2019 football jerseys<\/a>, the Nike garnet becomes closer to Gamecock garnet. And not for nothing: Some folks on Wednesday, who were loading up on anything with a Swoosh, were more than willing to give Nike the benefit of the doubt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like new colors,\u201d South Carolina fan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestate.com\/news\/local\/article316281234.html\" rel=\"Follow\" target=\"_blank\">Zack Henderson told The State.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019ve heard it took some time for Under Armour to dial that color in, and I\u2019ve heard Nike might have to do the same. But I\u2019m not a stickler on it if it\u2019s a shade or two off. I think it looks clean.
