When Nick Adair came down the hallway at Truist Field, he didn\u2019t expect to be greeted with cheers and applause by rows of Charlotte Knights players.<\/p>\n

He, his family and his best friend \u2014 flanked by the team\u2019s mascot, Homer the Dragon \u2014 were given a warm welcome by the team members, who wore \u201c#NICKSTRONG\u201d T-shirts.<\/p>\n

Adair, 16, is a patient at Atrium Health Levine Children\u2019s Hospital and the winner of the Knights\u2019 annual jersey design contest. On Saturday, he was honored with a one-day contract with the team, which was to wear his jersey during its game against the Rochester Red Wings that evening.<\/p>\n

Last year, Adair suffered a spinal cord injury when he jumped into a shallow pool, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He currently uses a power wheelchair.<\/p>\n

Team manager Chad Pinder called him \u201csomebody who obviously has the grit and determination to handle adversity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are the guys that you want in your clubhouse, those are the guys that lead the way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Adair worked with the Knights\u2019 graphic designer, Will Briggs, to translate his design onto the jerseys \u2014 replicas of which will be given out to the first 1,500 kids who attend Saturday night\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really hope [the kids] take some consideration to learn about spinal cord [injuries] and hear about it, so people won\u2019t make the same choice I did when I was out that night,\u201d Adair told The Charlotte Observer.<\/p>\n

The winning jersey design is black and lime green \u2014 the color for spinal cord injury awareness \u2014 with bone-shaped lettering. It also glows in the dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, this is the absolute highlight of my career,\u201d said Briggs. \u201cNick\u2019s a kid with crazy infectious energy, a big heart and a wicked creative mind, and I couldn\u2019t be happier for him and his night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adair joined the team for batting practice after his signing. Pinder also called Adair\u2019s favorite baseball player, Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson, over FaceTime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m basically famous now,\u201d Adair said to Olson. \u201cI\u2019ll be having to give you my autograph.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sense of humor reflects his attitude \u2014 his mother, Tonya Adair, called him \u201can upbeat person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s wanting to eventually mentor people, because he was in such good spirits when the accident happened,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen somebody has the same type of accident he has, he\u2019s aiming to help them get through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His family said they wanted others to be inspired by Adair, and for him to have a good time.<\/p>\n

Adair had one piece of advice for the Knights.<\/p>\n
