In the past 15 years, and especially in the last five, our city has seen an influx of pizza restaurants and chefs who’ve brought a diversity of styles and an attentiveness to elevated ingredients and approaches. No, Charlotte doesn’t have its own identifiable pizza, but our pizza places are getting national and international recognition. We’re becoming a very good pizza town.

So today, we bring you CharlotteFive’s Top 20 pizza rankings. You’ll find these restaurants and slice joints across the Charlotte area, and each is worth a drive or a detour.

A few notes before we begin:

As for my pizza cred: I’ve lived in Connecticut and enjoyed New Haven pizza. I’ve stood in rainy lines for a NYC pizza slice, and I’ve built trip itineraries around iconic pizza stops in Detroit, Chicago and other cities. All of which means I have likes and dislikes just like anyone else. Take these rankings as a guide for some pizza adventure, and let us know what we need to try (or try again!).

Buffalo style pizza comes at you hard. It’s doughier, not just thicker, and its sauce is strikingly sweet. It doesn’t really grow on you; you have to like it to like it. But the pizzeria voted best in Charlotte by CharlotteFive readers in 2023 is most definitely worth trying, and if you do, Bisonte delivers a version that stands up to the better pizzas back north. Pro tips: The Matthews location is the most consistent, and if you’re only in for one attempt, go for the abundant, well-crisped pepperoni.

Locations in Charlotte and Matthews | bisontepizzaco.com

We weren’t sure about Zämbies at first. The huge slices are not one-size-fits-all, and when you’re of a certain age, you don’t want your portions screaming “huge” at you. The vibe — from dining space to website to packaging — feels more attentive to branding than pizza. But the slices are authentically tasty with a bright, clean sauce. The crew is genuinely nice. As for the portion? Cut it in half. Share it with a fellow geezer. You’ll both be happy and full.

3204, North Davidson St., Charlotte | theshopzambies.com

Alino Pizzeria, which opened inside Mooresville’s Merino Mill in 2015, is one of North Carolina’s oldest Neopolitan-style pizzerias. It still follows the same formula: Caputo Italian flour for its cold-fermented crust, San Marzano tomatoes for its sauce, and buffalo mozzarella from Italy. It’s excellent, but be warned: it’s also expensive at $25-plus for a 16-inch basic Margherita and $30-plus for most other offerings.

500 S. Everything is good and everything is fresh, from the slightly sweet sauce to the crunchy crust that finds the right space between firm and foldable. It’s the kind of pizza you bring home to meet the parents.

16721 Orchard Stone Run Suite 120, Charlotte | lorenzos-pizzeria.com

It’s not difficult to find a thick-crusted pizza in Charlotte, but true Detroit style is harder to come by. For the uninitiated, it’s a rectangular pizza with Sicilian-like dough, a darkly caramelized crust and a few wide stripes of sauce over the toppings. Emmy Squared, which first opened in Brooklyn a decade ago, does it best in Charlotte. The crust is a bit denser than you’ll find in Detroit, but it nails the crispy outside/fluffy inside dynamic. It’s on the pricier side of pizza, but definitely worth the treat.

Two Charlotte locations: 1932 Hawkins St.; 1508 Central Ave. | emmysquaredpizza.com

If Charlotte had a pizza style, it would be something like what you get from Sal’s: sloppy and floppy Jersey-ish pies tossed by guys of non-Charlotte lineage who are unafraid to toss some seasoned or sliced beef on some dough and call it a pizza. This isn’t artisan, but it is very good in a comfort food kind of way. Nostalgia is a topping, too, and it’s abundant here.

3723 Monroe Rd, Charlotte | salspizzafactorync.com

Emilio’s opened in 2024 just over the South Carolina border in Fort Mill, and it quickly gathered enough of a following that a second Tega Cay location arrived earlier this year. It’s a tidy pizza – not too cheesy and not at all greasy. The sauce is generously spiced and perfectly savory. The crust is firm enough to stand up to toppings, especially if you ask for it well done (and you should.) Put it all together, and the locals have a very good case to make.

Read more Aldi is giving away free groceries this week. West, which opens for dinner hours Wed-Fri and earlier on the weekend, offers New York-ish style pizzas (owners Steven DeFalco and Trey Wilson call them “Americana”). East, which is open for lunch and dinner in a charming Elizabeth space, offers similar Americana pizzas plus rectangular Roman slices. Everything is premium here, from ingredients to the crust’s deep and full flavor. (We did see some slight inconsistencies on the bake that keeps Pizza Baby from the very top of these rankings.) Our favorite: The airy and crusty al taglio-style Roman slices. The crusts are still pillow-like and expertly leoparded. The menu is still fresh and creative, with adventurous seasonal offerings rotating in and out. Owners Kerrel and Nkem Thompson craft beautiful and thoughtful pizzas. The crusts are thin and aggressively charred, with grated Parmesan that nicely contrasts a bright and sweet sauce.
