The FBI investigated him.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, Hess could face up to 30 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Hess \u2014 nicknamed \u201cPapa\u201d \u2014 founded <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260310163557\/https:\/nepalorphanshome.org\/about\/nepal-orphans-home#sthash.iR6N10lQ.dpbs\"><u>Nepal Orphans Home<\/u><\/a>, a Davidson-based nonprofit organization that supported the welfare and wellbeing of orphaned or abandoned children in Nepal, in March 2005, according to its now-defunct website.<\/p>\n<p>The organization supported the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/papashouse.org\/our-story\"><u>Papa\u2019s House<\/u><\/a>, which operated several orphanages in Nepal. Josh Stein<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The charity <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260411084857\/https:\/nepalorphanshome.org\/announcing-changes-noh\"><u>shuttered<\/u><\/a> at the end of 2025, granting full autonomy to its Nepali counterpart, Papa\u2019s House NGO, according to the organization\u2019s website at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Hess\u2019 brother, Peter Hess, is a professor emeritus of economics at Davidson College and served as the president of Nepal Orphans Home\u2019s board of directors from its inception to its closing. He <a href=\"https:\/\/pegasuspublishers.com\/book\/papa___s-house\"><u>published a book<\/u><\/a> about his brother\u2019s work in February.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2011 article about protecting children from predatory volunteers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/report\/94067\/nepal-protecting-children-abuser-volunteers\"><u>The New Humanitarian<\/u><\/a>, Michael Hess said Papa\u2019s House\u2019s sister program, Volunteer Nepal \u2014 which shut down in 2022 \u2014 did not vet the volunteers it paired with Nepali organizations.
