McDonald\u2019s customers across North Carolina can soon get their hands on a classic dessert missing from menus for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

The original fried apple pie arrives Tuesday, June 23, at McDonald\u2019s restaurants nationwide, making a sweet return just in time for America\u2019s 250th birthday, the fast-food giant announced this week.<\/p>\n

The classic dessert, featuring a \u201csignature filling made with 100% American-grown apples,\u201d<\/a> will only be available for a limited time, although McDonald\u2019s didn\u2019t say how long. Pricing information wasn\u2019t immediately available.<\/p>\n

\u201cBringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America\u2019s 250th just feels right,\u201d Eric Cochran, a longtime McDonald\u2019s owner\/operator, said in a news release.<\/p>\n

The apple pie was McDonald\u2019s very first dessert<\/a>, joining menus in 1968, Eater.com reported. The pastry-wrapped treat was the brainchild of Cochran\u2019s grandfather, Tennessee franchisee Litton Cochran, who drew inspiration from a family recipe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen (then-McDonald\u2019s president) Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald\u2019s, my Grandad … suggested a fried apple pie as a classic that people would love,\u201d Eric Cochran said. \u201cMy Grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hand-pie has seen dozens of iterations since its debut, including the switch from deep-fried to baked<\/a> in 1992.<\/p>\n

The latter was touted as a healthier, grease-free option<\/a> \u2014 despite having more calories, sugar and total fat than its deep-fried predecessor.<\/a><\/p>\n

Before news that McDonald\u2019s would re-introduce its original fried pie, the treat was only available in two U.S. locales: Hawaii and a single restaurant in Downey, California,<\/a> according to Reader\u2019s Digest.<\/p>\n

Nothing beats classic apple, but McDonald\u2019s has offered a revolving door of seasonal pie flavors over the years, McClatchy News previously reported.<\/p>\n
