A new outdoor space at Atrium Health Levine Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> is giving young patients more than just a place to step outside. It is creating an environment centered on healing, connection and moments of joy during treatment.<\/p>\n

Hospital leaders, patients, families and representatives from Charlotte FC<\/a> gathered Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the opening of a newly reimagined patio designed to support children beyond the bedside. The collaborative project transforms an outdoor hospital space into an area where patients can experience fresh air, movement and play while continuing their care journey.<\/p>\n

The redesigned patio features vibrant murals, soccer-themed elements and interactive activity tables, all intended to bring energy into the hospital environment while creating a sense of normalcy for children undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

Hospital officials say the space reflects a growing focus on whole-patient care, recognizing that emotional well-being and everyday experiences are important parts of recovery.<\/p>\n

At the center of the celebration was eight-year-old patient Derek Munizcalero, a devoted soccer fan who served as the guest of honor during the event. For Derek, the new patio offers an opportunity to engage with the sport he loves while enjoying time outdoors experiences hospital leaders say are essential to helping children feel like kids, even while receiving medical care.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important for us that we have spaces where it\u2019s possible for them to get out and do more on their healing journey to make sure when they walk out of these doors we have taken care of every part of their well-being.\u201d said Meghan Clithero, the President of Atrium Health Levine Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n

Derek helped officially open the patio during a special ceremony attended by his family, Charlotte FC players and hospital teammates.<\/p>\n

The event also included a special coronation honoring Derek, highlighting the inspiration behind the project and the impact the new space will have on pediatric patients and their families.<\/p>\n

By combining healthcare with recreation and connection, the hospital hopes the patio will serve as a place where healing extends beyond treatment rooms and into moments that bring comfort, hope and joy to children facing medical challenges.<\/p>\n
