A day paddling the Dan River State Trail turned into a criminal investigation when kayakers stumbled onto a body in the water,<\/a> according to investigators in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

The grisly discovery was made around 5 p.m. Sunday near the Bethlehem Church Road boat ramp south of Eden, the Rockingham County Sheriff\u2019s Office reported in a May 11 news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeputies responded to a report of a possible person in the river near the bank from individuals kayaking,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said. \u201cUpon arrival, it was discovered that there was a deceased male located in the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift water rescue personnel from multiple departments were needed to recover the body, officials said.<\/p>\n

The body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner\u2019s Office \u201cto determine cause of death and identification,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis incident is not believed to be connected to any recent identified or unidentified human remains located in Rockingham County,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n

The Dan River is a popular attraction for paddle boaters in North Carolina, with 90 miles of the waterway designated as the Dan River State Trail<\/a>. The trail starts at the Virginia state line and covers Surry, Stokes and Rockingham counties.<\/p>\n
