With summer travel well underway travelers with pre-check could experience a smoother process getting through security at Charlotte Douglas International Airport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has installed new electronic gates in eight lanes, with the hope it will allow for a more efficient verification process for travel documents and identification. The e-gates use biometric data to match pre-check members\u2019 faces with their ID. The technology will verify if the passenger is a TSA pre-check passenger and if their provided credential is valid.<\/p>\n

CLT\u2019s TSA Federal Security Director Greg Hawko said the ability to try new technology is made possible thanks to the airport\u2019s continued investment in security.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe investment that they make every time we do something, by helping us do the electric work and funding, makes sure we can provide the best experience for passengers as they come through our checkpoints,\u201d Hawko said.<\/p>\n

The service is currently available in the airport at Security Checkpoint 2.<\/p>\n

The Charlotte airport processes around 35,000 originating passengers daily, with originating passengers making up around a third of the airport\u2019s total air traffic. Hawko said during the summer the airport can process more than 40,000 originating passengers a day. The gates are expected to help manage this increased passenger volume as summer travel continues, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a better experience for passengers, and it also helps enhance security by reducing the number of officers required at the front,\u201d Hawko said, adding security will be relocated for other tasks.<\/p>\n

A transportation security officer will monitor the e-gates to ensure verified passengers enter the checkpoint. Passengers entering the checkpoint line should have their REAL ID compliant identification in hand.<\/p>\n

The airport is currently in a data collecting phase to see how the technology is impacting traffic flow, according to Hawko. The gates were first placed in the airport in May and the data collecting process is expected to end in July, he said. But the gates are expected to continue to be used for the near future.<\/p>\n

Last year, TSA launched touchless ID<\/a> at the airport. That technology allowed eligible passengers to move through security more easily by similarly comparing a customer\u2019s image to photos on file with the government. This includes pictures from passports, visa cards and Global Entry.<\/p>\n

TSA Regional Spokesperson Carter Langston said the new e-gates build upon this technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are really happy with it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does add quite a bit of efficiency in the checkpoint operation from several perspectives, time being one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Langston said as passenger volume continues to increase TSA is looking at ways to make checkpoint operations more efficient for personnel as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an operational assessment\u201d he said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t the final answer yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLT is the seventh-busiest airport<\/a> in the world for takeoffs and landings, according to preliminary rankings released in April by Airports Council International. The airport had 574,193 aircraft operations last year, a 4% decline from 2024 and 7% increase from 2023.<\/p>\n

The airport served more than 53 million passengers<\/a> last year marking its second-busiest year on record. Nearly 12 million travelers passed through TSA checkpoints in 2025, a 2% decrease from 2024, but 9% higher than 2023, according to the airport.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Douglas remains the second-largest hub for American Airlines<\/a>, which accounts for around 90% of all flights out of the airport. The airline provides flights for more than 170 destinations in 27 countries at CLT through its global network.<\/p>\n
