Charlotte-born café named among nation’s best spots for coffee. Why folks love it

A well-loved Charlotte bakery and café was just named among the nation’s best spots to cozy up with a cup of coffee.

Amelie’s landed the No. 8 spot on USA Today’s 10Best Independent Coffee Shops list for 2026. It was the only North Carolina café to appear in the rankings of local spots with top-notch coffee, service and cozy vibes.

“Beyond serving great coffee, these locally owned cafés foster a sense of community, offering welcoming spaces where regulars are known by name and every visit feels a little more personal,” 10Best editors wrote.

A local mainstay, Amelie’s is known for its smorgasbord of pastries and other sweets. Think: croissants, salted caramel brownies, macarons, cheesecakes, éclairs and more.

Savory options include quiches and hand-crafted sandwiches paired with seasonal soups and salads.

Its drink menu is just as diverse, “with concoctions like their popular salted caramel mocha and thick hot chocolate competing with barista-crafted espressos and cappuccinos,” 10Best editors wrote.

The outlet also touted Amelie’s cushy ambience and “whimsical” interiors, replete with checkerboard flooring and pops of color throughout.

“Our cafés are developing creative and joyful experiences through our coffee program, and we’re so honored to see the hard work being recognized,” an Amelie’s spokesperson told CharlotteFive by email.

Amelie’s swung open the doors on its original NoDa location in 2008. It has expanded across the metro, adding spots in uptown, Plaza Midwood, Carmel, Montford and Rock Hill, South Carolina.

This isn’t the café’s first time in the national spotlight. Southern Living crowned it the best bakery in North Carolina in its 2023 guide of “The South’s Best,” the Charlotte Observer reported. The pastry shop was also named to The Daily’s Meal’s “America’s top 10 French bakeries” list, landing at No. 4.

“We’ve grown, but we’ve kept our favorite ingredients: artistry, curiosity, and a whole lot of butter,” Amelie’s website says.

For the rankings, 10Best’s expert panel submitted nominees for the independent coffee shop category, then invited the public to vote for their favorite over a month-long period.

The outlet didn’t say how many votes were cast.
