Thursday’s prep football update: No. 2 Providence Day rolls at Charlotte Latin
Providence Day, ranked No. 2 among all teams in North Carolina, got a relatively easy win on the road on Thursday night, taking down rival Charlotte Latin 49-7.

The Chargers and the Hawks were the two top-ranked teams in the latest N.C. private-school poll and both teams were playing their conference opener.
It was over pretty quickly.
The Chargers jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead and cruised as backup QB Gavin Bronikowski had another strong game. Bronikowski, who has played for starter Cole Cater since Sept. 4, threw for six touchdown passes in last week’s 51-14 win over Ambassador Christian.
Against Latin, Bronikowski’s early-third-quarter scoring pass to Ethan Dempsey opened up a 35-point lead and started a running clock. Just a few plays later, Providence Day’s Ashton Gibbs got a 57-yard interception return.
Providence Day (7-1, 1-0 Big South) won its fourth straight game. Charlotte Latin (3-5, 0-1) lost for the third time in four weeks.
(all games Friday at 7 unless noted)
Butler (4-3, 1-1 Meck Power 6) at West Charlotte (4-3, 1-1): It’s homecoming for West Charlotte, and Butler — a three-time state champ — probably isn’t used to being a homecoming opponent. A No. 3 conference seed could likely await the winner. The Bulldogs have won two of three games, led by senior QB Niko Henderson (1,225 yards passing, 11 TDs) and senior RB Da’mourian Thomas-Wright (373 yards, 4 TDs). West Charlotte comes off a bye week and a 22-6 win over Independence. The Lions should be fresh.

Palisades (6-1, 2-0 Southwestern) at Providence (3-4, 2-0): Palisades hopes to join the elite tier of Mecklenburg County football. This is the type of game the Pumas can make a statement in: Facing the reigning league champ on the road. Palisades has won three straight. After losing four in a row, Providence has won its last two games by a combined score of 87-21 to gain a share of the league lead.
Hickory Ridge (6-1, 4-0 Greater Metro) at AL Brown (7-0, 4-0): There’s been a lot of talk about Brown’s offense, which averages nearly 40 points and 360 yards per week, but the Wonders’ defense has nine sacks, 13 fumble recoveries and has held three teams to seven points or less. Hickory Ridge has won six straight since a season-opening home loss to Providence. Winner here is likely league champ.
Charlotte Catholic (4-3, 2-1 Southern Carolina) at Marvin Ridge (6-1, 2-1): These two teams are tied for second place behind Weddington (8-0, 4-0) in the league standings, and the winner Friday will have the inside track to an all-important No. 2 seed from the conference for the postseason.
Davie County (5-2, 2-0 North Piedmont) at Mooresville (3-4, 2-0): Mooresville started the year 0-4 and took two big losses to Weddington (49-17, Aug. 21) and Hough (49-10, Sept. 11). Since then the Blue Devils are 3-0, winning comfortably, and are tied with Lake Norman and Davie for first place in the conference. Friday’s home matchup is their biggest test since the win streak began.
South Point (7-1, 3-1 Big South) at Kings Mountain (6-1, 3-0): Crest and Kings Mountain are tied for the league lead. To get a share, South Point needs to win Friday, win out, and root for Crest to beat Kings Mountain in the season finale Oct. 30.
