Can Carolina Panthers beat the Detroit Lions in prime time? Our predictions, bets

The Carolina Panthers are playing on the Sunday Night Football stage for the first time in a decade.

Can they make the most of it?

That’s what head coach Dave Canales, passing-yards-leader Bryce Young and every other Panther will try to do at 8:20 p.m. Sunday in Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte. They’ll be facing a Top 5 offense in the league in the Detroit Lions; fans can catch the game on NBC.

The good news? Carolina is 6-1 all-time against Detroit at home. In fact, the franchise has won six straight at home against the Lions — the latest win coming in a 2022 winter game in which the Panthers ran for over 200 yards and Lions head coach Dan Campbell shook Steve Wilks’ hand at midfield postgame and offered some colorful praise: “That’s an absolute a–kicking. That’s a great f—— job.”

Some other good news? Carolina’s offense is humming: Young, as mentioned, leads the league in passing yards with 939 yards and paces the league in 25-plus-yard completions this season with 11. The entire offensive unit is fifth in points scored and seventh in total offense, in fact.

The bad news, though? Oh, where to begin?

The list of Panthers (1-2) injuries reads like a CVS receipt this week. Starting corners Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) are on the injured reserve. Starting receiver Xavier Legette is out with a knee injury, and the team’s best interior offensive lineman Damien Lewis is out at least a week with an elbow ailment.

Young will play, according to Canales, but he’ll be managing a knee injury himself — and will be relying on several offensive playmakers who will be playing but might be working through things of their own: starting offensive tackle Monroe Freeling was in the concussion protocol earlier this week; starting wideout Jalen Coker missed practice Wednesday with a hurt quad and appears likely to miss the game based on Saturday’s roster moves; even tight end Darren Waller was listed with a toe injury earlier in the week.

And all this is coming right against a Detroit Lions (2-1) offense that is Top 3 in points per game (31.0), Top 10 in yards per game (368.3) and Top 10 in fourth-down conversion rate (75%) — the latter of which is a Campbell staple. (The Lions defense has some holes, including being 31st in the league in third-down conversion percentage, a revealing stat in the NFL, but it’s tough to discount their talent on either side of the ball.)

That all leads to the ultimate question:

Who will win?

The Panthers are on national television for the first time in a long time. That’ll be on NBC, with Mike Tirico on play-by-play with Cris Collinsworth as the analyst. Melissa Stark is the sideline reporter.

Here’s the radio information:

The Panthers are 3.5-point underdogs to the Lions for Sunday, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under is 50.5 points.

Here are some bets you might find compelling:

Panthers beat writer Alex Zietlow is 3-0 after coming close to predicting the exact score of Week 3’s 21-18 loss to the Browns. Columnist Scott Fowler is 0-3 — his optimism hasn’t done him any favors this year — while reporter Langston Wertz and editor Steve Wiseman are both 1-2.

Alex Zietlow: Panthers 38, Lions 31. Bryce Young is the real deal. Period. End of thought. Right now, he’s playing well enough — and doing so under enormous pressure rates — for me to think the Panthers have a chance against anyone so long as he’s back there, which he will be Sunday night. I’m also not entirely convinced the Lions are legit, despite their abundance of offensive talent. And yes, I know the injury situation is bad in Carolina … but sometimes, that forces coaches to get creative and play-callers to break a whole bunch of tendencies. It could happen. Something similar happened last year against the Rams, didn’t it?

Scott Fowler: Lions 34, Panthers 27. An entertaining game will end up with the Lions on top — they just have too many offensive weapons for an injury-ravaged Panthers D to handle. I am glad to see “SNF” show up in Charlotte to cover a game for the first time since 2015, and for everybody’s sakes, I hope the rain stays away and the game stays close.

Langston Wertz Jr.: Lions 38, Panthers 20. Carolina picked a mighty fine time to put their two starting cornerbacks on IR. Detroit QB Jared Goff ranks sixth in passing yards (802) and second in passing touchdowns (8) in the league so far this season. So it may not the best time for the Panthers to hit Sunday night national TV.

Steve Wiseman: Lions 34, Panthers 17. The beat-up Carolina defense will have a difficult time slowing Jared Goff and the Lions offense. Despite last week I like the Panthers offense. But injuries appear to be slowing that unit too. At least the nighttime skyline shots will be cool on SNF.
