Huntersville commissioner’s son arrested, charged in fatal shooting of a teen
The son of Huntersville town commissioner Edwin Quarles was arrested and charged in Sunday’s fatal shooting of a teenager in Charlotte’s University area.

The 17-year-old victim, Cameron Massey-Brice, was spending the night at a relative’s home “when individuals with harmful intentions disrupted the gathering with gunfire,” his family said in a Go Fund Me to help pay for his funeral and burial.
“In an instant, a night with family turned into an unimaginable tragedy,” his family said.
Police obtained a first-degree murder warrant on 21-year-old Evin Quarles, who later turned himself in at police headquarters, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.
Officers found the teen with multiple gunshot wounds after responding to a 911 call just after 3 a.m. in the 9300 block of Kittansett Drive, off North Tryon Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police found a second person who’d been shot, 22-year-old Jacori Mitchell, nearby in the 9600 block of North Tryon Street. He also died at the scene.
“Evin is my son and his personal matter has nothing to do with his mother or me,” Edwin Quarles said in a statement to Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC. “Based on the evidence gathered thus far, he will be ok! My family and I are ok, and I will continue to serve my constituents well.”

According to an arrest warrant, Evin Quarles and Massey-Brice “were with a group for the evening and were at the apartment together. Witnesses stated that Quarles told Brice ‘we have smoke’ and fired four shots at Brice, striking him.”
The shooter drove away in a silver Ford F-150 “that he had been driving throughout the night,” police said in the warrant, citing witnesses.
Police found the vehicle on the Flock camera system near the homicide scene right after Massey-Brice was shot and again as the driver drove away, according to the warrant.
The vehicle is registered to Evin Quarles, the warrant states.
Police aren’t saying if they know what prompted the shootings or if they have a suspect in Mitchell’s killing.
