Japanese restaurant voted among city’s best closes after 19 years in South End
Nikko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar has ended its nearly 20-year run in South End Charlotte, but will get a second life as an “elevated” steakhouse concept.

The eatery, located on the first floor of The Arlington building, was officially sold on Tuesday, Aug. 18, Johnny Walker with Monument Commercial Partners confirmed to CharlotteFive. Walker and partner Xavier Grier are lead brokers at the firm, which represented the sellers in the roughly $4 million transaction.
The restaurant will reopen as Nikko Steakhouse, specializing in premium steaks, seafood, sushi and traditional Japanese fare, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive. The new concept will blend elements of the old Nikko with a new look, a new menu and a revamped atmosphere.
“We’re not changing the tradition — we’re elevating it,” said new owner Tyon D. Thompson. “Guests will recognize the spirit of Nikko, but they’ll experience a new level of food, atmosphere, service, and hospitality.”
“We’re excited for Charlotte to see what we’ve created. This truly will be ‘Not Your Ordinary Steakhouse.’”
Thompson will run Nikko Steakhouse alongside business partner Allan Jones, who will serve as the restaurant’s operations manager, according to the release.

The sellers, who are retiring, bought the retail space from The Arlington’s original developers back in 2007, Walker said. From there, they built the shell space into what would become Nikko Japanese Restaurant.
The eatery debuted that same year, serving up “innovative sushi and Japanese cuisine” in a modern, club-like atmosphere, CharlotteFive previously reported. Nikko was also a top spot for ramen and was named second-best Japanese restaurant in the city, as voted by Charlotte Observer readers.
It also snagged bronze for Best Sushi in the 2025 Charlotte’s Best poll.
“Thank you, Charlotte, for the unforgettable memories, the loyalty and the love,” read an Instagram post announcing the sale. “You made Nikko more than a restaurant — you made it a legacy.”
So what’s next? Renovations to the 6,800-square-foot space are underway, though the new owners stopped just short of confirming the grand opening date.
But they left us with this: Locals can expect “A new look. Same Tradition. Elevated experience.”
