Rock Hill projects: New dorm at Winthrop and revamp of former movie theater
A new Winthrop University dormitory will begin to replace facilities the school took down two years ago, adding a new housing option.

Winthrop applied to the city of Rock Hill for a site plan review to build a 4-story dormitory on campus. The four-year public school is at 701 Oakland Ave.
Winthrop tore down its Richardson and Wofford residence halls along Cherry Road two years ago. Each was 8 stories, with 400 units. Both dorms were built in the 1960s.
The new dorm is the first phase of a project to replace what was demolished. It will have 202 units at more than 108,000 square feet. A second phase is expected to add another residence hall and a dining hall while realigning Winthrop Alumni Drive.

Winthrop hasn’t submitted those second phase plans for review.
Winthrop’s board of trustees approved up to $55.5 million in bonds for the dorm project. Work is ongoing, and construction should begin in January.
