Jet attempting to land during thunderstorm ends up in field, NC officials say

A jet carrying two people left the runway and skidded across a field while trying to land during a thunderstorm, according to the Statesville Regional Airport.

It happened Thursday and the plane sustained damage to a wing and undercarriage, photos show.

“At approximately 6:25 p.m., a Citation jet based at the Statesville Regional Airport landed during a heavy storm,” the airport reported in an Aug. 6 news release.

“After landing, the aircraft departed the side of the runway and came to rest in a field within the airport boundary. … No injuries were reported.”

The airport was temporarily closed to remove the aircraft and inspect the runway for damage, officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

Statesville Regional Airport is where NASCAR star Greg Biffle and six other people died during a crash landing December 2025.

The airport is about a 45-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte.
