Enter CLT Airport giveaway to win this piece of aviation history
One lucky winner will be the new owner of a prized piece of aviation history: a retired airfield sign.

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is hosting a giveaway for the sign, which opened on Saturday, July 11, and will close on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 11:59 p.m.
The red sign will be from Runway 18C-36C, which became Runway 1R-19L on July 9. The runway was closed down for 12 hours to allow crews to replace 64 vertical panels and 23 surface-painted markings and signs, according to the CLT Airport website.
These airfield signs are used by pilots to confirm the plane is lined up with the appropriate runway during takeoffs and landings. Since the airport will be adding a fourth parallel runway to open in fall 2027, a renaming process was necessary.
“Because only three runways in the same orientation can be designated Left, Center, or Right, CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway needed a new designation to prevent confusion or errors among pilots and air traffic controllers,” the CLT Airport website says.

The sign in the giveaway will be 10.5 feet by 2.7 feet and does not include the black taxiway sign which sits next to airfield signs. According to a CLT Airport spokesperson, the airport will not give away more runway signs but is considering other sweepstakes.
The newly-renamed runway was commissioned in the early 1970s and the signs were replaced based on operational requirements, maintenance and Federal Aviation Administration standards, an airport spokesperson wrote in a statement.
The Runway ReSIGNed Sweepstakes is open to North Carolina and South Carolina residents who are at least 18 years old. CLT Airport and airline employees, along with their immediate family members, are not eligible to win.
