According to Southern Living, the road, an 18-mile portion of U.S. 221, offers many of the same mountain views, hiking opportunities and charming small towns that make the Blue Ridge Parkway a favorite destination. Running roughly parallel to the Parkway, the route connects destinations such as Blowing Rock, Linville, Banner Elk, Valle Crucis and Boone.
Here’s what you need to know about the Little Parkway.
The Little Parkway predates the Blue Ridge Parkway by decades, Southern Living reports.
Originally built in 1889 as a toll road between Blowing Rock and Linville, the scenic route offers sweeping mountain views and serves as the backbone of a roughly 50-mile loop through the High Country. The drive also provides access to overlooks, nature walks, hiking trails, restaurants, breweries and historic sites across several mountain towns.
Southern Living also noted that local tourism officials are encouraging visitors to return to the region, as many businesses remain open and rely on tourism dollars despite lingering perceptions that the area is still closed following Hurricane Helene.

Last week, FEMA announced an additional $298 million to support recovery efforts in the area, including debris removal and road repairs, The Charlotte Observer reported.
Southern Living recommends stopping at several of the High Country’s most popular attractions, including Grandfather Mountain, where visitors can cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge, explore the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery and access nearby trails.
Other nearby attractions include Moses Cone Manor, Price Lake and the Glen Burney Trail near Blowing Rock, which features waterfalls and more challenging hiking terrain.
The publication also highlights opportunities to explore the mountain towns connected by the route. Visitors can ride the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster at Sugar Mountain, browse shops and galleries in Banner Elk, visit the historic Mast General Store in Valle Crucis or catch a performance of “Horn in the West” at Daniel Boone Park in Boone.
