Angelina Naomi Chicas, 17, was unresponsive in a Honda Civic after the crash in the 4300 block of North Sharon Amity Road, police said. She was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she was pronounced dead.

Chicas appeared to be attempting to turn on North Sharon Amity Road when the driver of a Chrysler 300 collided with her vehicle, according to a preliminary investigation. The driver of the Chrysler was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they haven’t yet determined the cause of the crash.

Chicas was an employee at Manolo’s Bakery, a Latin American bakery in east Charlotte.

“[On Sunday morning], while we make our cakes and bread, we are crying over the tragic loss of our young team member, Angelina, in a car accident,” Manolo Betancur, the bakery’s owner, wrote in a statement on its social media. “As my bakers decorate the cakes, they pause, and silent tears fall onto their work tables, showing their grief.”

The bakery requested community support for Chicas’ family, including her mother and brother. A family member created a GoFundMe, which described Chicas as “deeply loved” and “a beautiful daughter, a wonderful sister, and a precious part of our family.”

Last fall, the bakery closed for the first time in 28 years when the U.S. Border Patrol began about a week of raids in Charlotte.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Sessoms at (704) 432-2169 ext. 3 or leave anonymous tips with Charlotte Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
